Book Review: Telling Yourself the Truth

Telling Yourself the Truth by William Backus and Marie Chapian

As a student in Communication Studies, and specifically related to interpersonal communication or conflict in communication, I can tell you one theme that seems to resurface again and again is the idea of self-talk.  Self talk encompasses all of those messages you tell yourself about everything.  We tend to do this without even realizing we are doing it–it is that automatic.  The problem with doing a lot of self-talk is that much of what we tell ourselves is not based in truth.  The Christian authors of this book will help you identify the messages you’re telling yourself that are harmful and replace them with truthful messages.  I found the principles shared in this book to be very helpful!  I’ll leave you with a quote from the book that summarizes what to expect:  “The Bible says it is the truth that sets man free.   Jesus Christ is the living Truth.  When we inject the truth into our every thought, taking a therapeutic broom and sweeping away the lies and misbeliefs which have enslaved us, we find our lives radically changed for the happier better.”

A Servant Heart

by Jessica Egge

Growing up I was privileged to observe the life of my grandmother who lived next door; her servant heart was clearly seen in her everyday actions toward others. My grandmother began serving in the camp kitchen at Living Word Bible Camp when I was a small child. Her work in the camp kitchen was a natural extension of the work in her own kitchen where she was always in the middle of making something.  Grandma enjoyed coming up with new ideas for the camp menu and testing them out on my siblings and I. My memories of her in the camp kitchen encapsulate her joy of cooking and of effortlessly sharing that joy with others.

Is there someone in your life that has demonstrated a servant heart?
